About The Conference

"It is better to be prepared for an opportunity and not have one than to have an opportunity and not be prepared." - Whitney M. Young, Jr.

The Whitney M. Young, Jr. Center for Urban Leadership is a nonprofit educational institute that exists to foster positive social & economic change through effective Urban Leadership development.

Our mission is to cultivate and enhance the leadership capabilities of individuals and organizations that serve urban communities.

Our role is to convene and link those entities to practical leadership development tools and resources to help them address capacity issues and various leadership challenges.

Our philosophy is that through the enrichment and development of urban leaders, urban communities can be improved and empowered, thereby helping to create a society where all people have equal opportunity to be positive contributors.

Health & Quality of Life: CEO Roundtable Presented by Pfizer
1:15pm - 5:00pm

In recent years several of the National Urban League affiliate CEOs have expressed an interest in pursuing innovation approaches to address the health and wellness needs of their communities. Of the approaches mentioned, improving health literacy, health equity and access to advanced health care solutions, including clinical trial research participation are but some of the topics in which Urban League CEOs have expressed interest. This CEO Roundtable will bring together Pfizer executive leadership, NUL and UL affiliate CEOs to discuss:

  • Cultivating strategic relationships, lead community efforts and best support Pfizer’s goal of building trusting relationships within target markets,
  • Developing strategies for increasing community awareness of clinical trial participation as a healthcare solution, and

Establishing an ongoing Urban League Health Literacy and Equity working group (UL affiliate CEO and executive staff) that extends beyond the WMY Conference.

    8:00am - 9:00am

Enough is Enough. VOTE! is the National Urban League’s new voter engagement campaign. In this current political climate, marginalized communities cannot afford to sit out this election or let our votes be silenced by voter suppression tactics. There is power in our collective vote. When we go to the polls we overwhelmingly elect representatives that champion the issues essential to our families and communities.

Enough of our civil rights being stripped away by the rolling back of immigration, voting rights, and criminal justice laws and policies. Enough of our public schools being underfunded and our children being over-penalized. Enough of the attacks on access to affordable healthcare and women’s reproductive rights. And, enough of the unjustified killings of unarmed people of color by the police. Vote on Tuesday, November 6! ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!

Leadership Luncheon: Reimagining Wakanda – Black Power and the Digital Revolution
        12:30pm - 1:30pm

The world is changing and young Black people have to reinvent new systems, rather than adjust to old ones.  All lot of things that we take for granted could, and often should, become a relic.  The traditional labor market, currency based on a gold standard, national allegiance, and national borders are all social constructs that are subject to reexamination and revision. Although Wakanda was based on a fictional, and highly advanced African society, we have to reimagine it with digital futurism to realize our true Wakandan potential.  In the near future, the confluence of life with virtual and augmented reality will eliminate the need for proximity-based loyalties. Transcontinental alliance unconfined by national borders could replace national allegiances. Currency could become crypto, and agreements and trust will be distributed through blockchain technology and peer-to-peer transactions, making all people, all powerful agents of contracts and ownership. Intelligent automated systems will perform human labor, and humans will pursue their passions without the burden of controlled time (like an 8-hour workday) and hierarchical systems (like bosses).  Much of the anxiety and impatience associated with Black millennials come from this sense that the world is changing, yet too many people in power are invested in the status quo.  The Black digital revolution will require global citizenry and embracing technology, and the pursuit of a Black power utopia as the catalyst for innovations and social action.
